SHOW US YO SKILLZ SHOW US YO SKILLZ SHOW
Kicking the dirt on the ground as she trudged along at the fair, Arizona kept her eyes on her black flip-flops and her toes that were turning a deep brown from the dirt. She had to keep reminding herself what a city girl like her was doing at a rodeo in Texas. Because Oliver invited me. She didn't want to disappoint him. Oliver was cute, and everything, but probably not worth her time. So why'd she say yes to someone she only worked with a couple times in chemistry class? She hated disappointing people. Except those creatures she calls her parents. She could disappoint them and smile about it afterwards. But someone like Oliver Hazard? Oh, no, she couldn't. The quarterback for the school football team, most sought-after student in school. She couldn't disappoint him, no sir.
So there she was. At a rodeo. In Texas. Trying to impress the hell outta Oliver Hazard just by showing up and acting interested. She didn't know a thing about what he was doing today, not even what it was called. He had just invited her along to watch him ride in the rodeo. In her mind, she thought sarcastically about a bull riding competition, like on TV. She was still confused as to why her parents chose to move to a small town in Texas rather than another city. But there was no changing their minds now. Arizona fought to keep her mind on track, as in not on her parents. She looked around at everything that was at the fair for the first time since she arrived.
There were stands and game booths and cotton candy, like you'd see anywhere else there was a fair. There were animals and petting zoos and small children running around without their mommies and daddies. In a small town like Waldenburg, where everyone knew everyone else, she supposed this was acceptable behavior. But Arizona wasn't used to it, not one bit. Suddenly, the fair became too much, and she didn't want to be there any longer. She hurried along to her desitnation, the riding ring, as fast as she could, trying not to bump into anyone along the way.
She made it just as music started playing. She made her way backstage where Oliver said she could wait. Leaning up against the wooden ring, she watched in amazement. She had no idea what he was doing, what it all meant, or anything like that. Arizona looked around for a moment to ask someone. "This is going to sound silly, but what is he doing?" She laughed at herself, waiting for the man's reply. "That's called reining. It's showing trust between a rider and horse, speed, and precision. Oliver here is doing a fantastic job, riding bareback." Staring open-mouthed at Oliver in the ring, riding bareback, Arizona suddenly felt at peace. For the first time since she came to Waldenburg, she felt like she kind of belonged. Someday, she'd have to have someone teach her how to do what Oliver was doing right now.
"That was impressive." Arizona breathed as the song ended and the crowd already started to disperse. Arizona was still playing the movements in her head. The spinning, the running, that fact that this was all done bareback. She may not know a thing about horses, but she knew riding bareback was an accomplishment in itself. She watched Oliver as he led his horse to the entrance gate, taking off his shirt as he went. Ari stifled a gasp as he did so. She would not let herself swoon over him just because he was a quarterback. Even so, as he walked towards the water trough with his horse, shirtless, Arizona couldn't help but wonder how adorable and cute he was.
"Hey!" She forced herself to call out as she walked towards him. "Great job out there." She stood a few feet away from him and straightened out her bright yellow t-shirt. She had meant it, and not in the way that meant she was just trying to get his attention, either. But maybe, just maybe, Arizona saw herself with Oliver, like a couple, and maybe, just maybe, she didn't mind it one bit. But she knew with all her heart that it would never happen. A football star and a freak like her? Never. She was still confused as to why he invited her there in the first place. "Your horse too," She added. "She's beautiful." Arizona smiled as she stood close enough to talk, but far enough away that she didn't look like she was hitting on him.
